Using J2EE Datasources with CFMX 6.1

One thing has always puzzled me about CFMX 6.1 on top of a J2EE server such as Weblogic, and that's why you can't use the underlying servers JDBC implementation and Datasources. With this in mind, I set about writing a tutorial to use the Weblogic RMI driver to access Datasources defined in the Weblogic console.

I didn't get very far however, it turns out (and I found this by accident), that CFMX 6.1 automatically finds Datasources deployed in the local JNDI tree! What this means to the ColdFusion coder is that you can use the underlying servers JDBC implementation as a standard datasource.

Here's a quick snap shot of the CF Administration console with a PostgreSQL datasource deployed using the Weblogic console:

If you'd like to know WHY you'd even want to go through the trouble of using a J2EE Datasource rather than standard CFMX, then please check out the list of features in Weblogic's JDBC implementation: http://dev2dev.bea.com/products/wlserver81/articles/WLS81JDBC.jsp
